Chris Hedges & Robert Scheer on Gorbachev, Russia & Ukraine

Journalists Chris Hedges and Robert Scheer discuss Mikhail Gorbachev, his life, his role in the end of the Cold War and his legacy today. How does he relate to Vladimir Putin, the state of Russia today and the war in Ukraine.

  1. Russians that don’t speak English have a common perspective and a different metric that we probably will never understand. Gorbachev became the fall guy. We did one of his first interviews with America media.
I was friends with one of the Gorbachev coup leaders who refused to be pardoned – General Varennikov – who was 18 in the battle of Stalingrad. A proud Russian who lived thru events probably impossible for an American to imagine. Yes, he said, Stalin did horrible purges, but WE accomplished a lot in a short time. I spent a month with him in Kabul, Afghanistan as he prepared their exit from Afghanistan. I was with CBS News. The communist government then lasted another 5 years. After the U.S. left – the Kabul government didn’t last one day.
Twenty years, trillions of dollars, thousands of lives to replace the Taliban with the Taliban.
Mike Hoover, thank you for scheerpost

  2. utter ignorance displayed by hedges and Scheer re: democracy oligarchy USSR, China—china is not a a market economy, USSR was less bureaucratized than USA—hedges as usual is an idiot. Gorby despised by Russians—seduced by western stupidities…USSR functioned at a better level socially culturally economically than USA could ever hope for, especially during Stalin…typical bitter stupidity from both—slogans—authoritarian…..

    1. Ah, the glorious days of Stalin. Giligan should take his fantasies and insults back to his island. The rest of us can listen to the discussion and form our own opinions.

    2. Bertrand Russell: “The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.”

It’s hardly surprising this illiterate dreck was written by ‘Gilligan’, a name derived from a poor sitcom, carried by a childish fool.

  3. Anyone who calls a truth teller like Chris Hedges ignorant is beyond ignorance !!!

    1. Hedges isn’t ignorant. I think he’s an op. I’d rather think that Scheer is naive rather than an op because he lived through the late ’40’s-’50’s, which Gore Vidal described as a time when democracy functioned, not perfectly but seemed to slowly improve. No one in this video brought up the national security state, which Vidal viewed as so dangerous that he suggested at a ’91 Natl Press Club speech that we should pursue an Article 5 convention of the states to re-write the Constitution.
Ukraine is a side show, just like 9/11. Yes, our government is that corrupt and evil. Self-described “liberals” (who aren’t at all, it’s an abuse of the word) are the first to deny that the US government is at war with us. Why do we think that atrocious things can be done in our name to people all around the world, but the chickens will never come home to roost? How can generations watch videos of a president getting his brains blown out in clear daylight (not to mention so many other political leaders) and not understand that a natl security state negates democracy? Why do we think we can shut our eyes and it’ll go away, when it and its billionaire funders are now intentionally demolishing the global economy and the power of western nations, while memory-holing Enlightenment ideals like democracy to force us to accept technofeudalism? Will it take mass starvation for people to wake up and understand that they want to kill us, exceptional ones? Well, another 9/11 anniversary will pass this weekend and Dick Cheney, W, Giuliani, etc. are not in prison. Nobody calls them “domestic extremists” and a danger to democracy. WHY NOT? Seriously, if talking heads can’t question even 9/11, I assume they’re ops and I stop listening. I’m disgusted with most of “alt” media too, which it never really was. We let this all happen, mofos. Don’t ask “why” about the current congress and administration, look in the mirror. Yes, we are some butt ugly f-ing stupid narcissistic mofos.

  4. Robert Scheer: “The Democrats are the major warmongers now…They are out of control.”

Back in 2000, it was Scheer’s colleagues at The Nation who pleaded with Ralph Nader not to run for president. The stakes are just too high, they said, to consider voting 3rd party, voting against the Gore-Lieberman ticket.

All those who pushed such nonsense are to some extent responsible for the dismal state of electoral politics in this country. They could’ve ditched the Clintonites and the corrupt DP, but they didn’t. Their little careers and slots in society were just too important to countenance such an idea.

    1. And the Democrats blamed and continue to blame Nader for Gore’s defeat. Nader challenged them, and they hate him for it. Just as they hate Assange for challenging them.

      1. True. Had Gore carried his home state, he would’ve won the electoral college. And had tens of thousands of Democrats in Florida voted for Gore instead of Bush, Gore would’ve won the election.

Those still confused about this should see “An Unreasonable Man.”

  5. Any outcome in which Chinese and Russian go at militarized and actual imperialism is not defeated is one from which democracy will never recover.

The fact left-ish, Neo Progressive demagogues and propaganda buffs like Scheer and Hedges support it is a blemish THEY would never be able to wash off.

    1. H.L. Mencken: ‘Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public.’

US opponents go to bed drunk with the knowledge their enemy is led by a school-yard gang of corrupt, arrogant fools. It makes China and Russia look like soft beds of stability, reason and restraint.

Americans have been lying to themselves for decades, if not centuries. Electing a proudly ignorant, bare-faced liar as President, and maintaining their support illuminates how little contact Americans have with reality.

The rest of the world can no longer pretend Americans know anything about the world, their own best interests, or the best interests of their strongest allies and best friends. They can’t be expected to defend democracy, expand human rights, maintain an incorruptible rule of ‘law’, or manage the most important part of world’s economy.

Voltaire: “Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.”

      1. That’s a great Voltaire quote, but didn’t he also say something about how he never intended to enlighten serving girls and shoe makers?

  6. Just an awesome discussion on the Katie Halper Show with Chris Hedges and Bob Scheer! Essential analysis and information; very scary situation here in the USA, but crucially important to have Chris
    and Bob’s voices!

  7. Ms. Halper – Can you modulate your voice so it’s not so annoyingly nasal – – and way too much of it before you get to your very important guests who are so much more than you are. Please. I’d like to like you but it’s difficult when you’re so hard to listen to.

  8. Gorby saw that the USSR had failed to deliver the high material standard of living to its citizens that the USA had. He wanted the same for his people. Unfortunately he drank the KoolAid and falsely attributed the USA’s success to their ‘free market’, the only thing free being the USA’s untrammeled freedom to plunder wealth from other countries by bribing corrupt leaders or regime changes by astroturf coups or assassination if necessay. The other massive unearned exuberant advantage the USA had was the international reserve currency privilege, which enabled them to import oil and vast material wealth by simplly ‘printing’ US dollars.
So Gorby made the mistake of dismantling the USSR and opening up Russia to ‘free market’ plunder by the USA.
If only Gorby knew then what the rest of the world is finally learning about the USA now, as we see the ‘free market’ turning inwards to cannibalize itself.
