Sources inside China told the South China Morning Post (SCMP) that retail giant Walmart has asked to resume exports of products such as stationery and office supplies, garment hangers, packaging supplies and others.
Despite the reduction in shipments due to recent tariff hikes by the Trump administration and responses from Beijing, multiple sources confirmed to SCMP Walmart’s notices to resume business.
In SCMP’s report, Paul Tai, regional director at Mainetti, a company partnered with multiple American retail groups, explained, “We have learned that major retailers have advised their Chinese vendors to resume orders.”
According to a stationery and office products manufacturer’s vice president, the costs would not fall on them. “We have been told by our long-time partner Walmart to start shipping more [to the US], and we won’t need to bear the extra costs of the new tariffs [on Chinese goods].”
The Trump administration’s 145% tariffs have certainly slowed business down, with orders from China falling by over 40% compared to the same time last year.
According to the Office of the United States Trade Representative, Chinese imports in 2024 totaled $438.9 billion.
Experts quoted by SCMP indicate that if Walmart has resumed shipments then it could indicate American corporations are putting pressure on Trump and a deal between the U.S. and China could come soon.
