After U.S. Senators and others spoke out about Trump’s Ukraine peace deal, he is now saying his plan isn’t final, telling NBC News, “Not my final offer,” and, “One way or the other, we have to get it ended.”
The former Ukraine ambassador, Bill Taylor, told CNN that Trump should “shift the focus of his diplomatic pressure from the Ukrainian government back to Russia,” saying, “The pressure needs to be put on Putin to stop this war, and President Trump can do that.”
Also from CNN: Ukrainian citizens are fearful about the peace deal, with one saying he is nervous it might turn into Belarus.
Ukrainian citizens are not the only ones upset, with some U.S. senators voicing displeasure with the deal. ABC reported: “It rewards aggression, pure and simple. There’s no ethical, legal, moral, or political justification for Russia claiming eastern Ukraine,” Independent Maine Sen. Angus King said during a panel discussion at the Halifax International Security Forum in Canada. (King who is independent caucuses with the Democrats )
Mitch McConnell said in a statement Friday that “if Administration officials are more concerned with appeasing Putin than securing real peace, then the President ought to find new advisers.” Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called it an “outrage.”
The Senate’s top Democrat, Chuck Schumer, while commenting on the deal, had this to say: “I will speak plainly because I fear that — nearly four years into this war — far too many people, including some of our very own leaders, have lost sense of the dimensions and stakes of this conflict.”
Other Schumer excerpts:
“Vladimir Putin is a thug and a butcher.”
“Trump’s so-called ‘peace plan’ gives this thug and butcher just about everything that he wants.”
“There’s only one word to describe this plan: capitulation.”
“The deal on the table would — among other things — cede to Russia substantial Ukrainian territory in the Donetsk that the Russian military does not currently hold, and it would require Ukraine to shrink and disarm parts of its military.”
“Putin would have a literal launching pad to invade Ukraine again.”
“This is not a prescription for lasting peace. All it guarantees is more aggression, more war, more bloodshed.”
“The world has seen, again and again, the cost of weakness in response to a murderous dictator.
“To stand with Ukraine at this moment is to stand with every single person on Earth who yearns to be free.”
He had more to say that you can read here.
It is odd that these Democrats would speak of rewarding aggression, while — hopefully — I’ve made it clear that I’m not a fan of war or the suffering of people who did nothing more than vote for or elect a leader. Shaheen and King sold out their own values on health care to appease bullies who always get their way.
Peace is not pretty, and Zelensky has had opportunities to charge ahead for peace, but he refused to negotiate and give up land. So now it’s difficult to believe that these Democrats have the moral authority to say “don’t bend,” even though bending could mean an end to the war. Zelensky has been a good leader for his people during a trying time, but on this road to peace, he hasn’t been the leader that was needed.
I’ll end with something I saw the other day on The Daily Show, both about these Democrats and their sell-out on health care, as well as two members of the House of Representatives discussing that and more. One of these Democrats, Rep. Chris Deluzio, is the same person on whom Donald Trump once suggested we should maybe use the death penalty. Deluzio’s field office yesterday received a bomb threat.
