Trump threw his support behind right-wing candidate Nasry “Tito” Asfura in Honduras’s upcoming presidential election along with pardoning former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who was sentenced in 2024 to a 45-year sentence on drug-trafficking and weapons charges. Members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and other critics immediately sounded the alarm. Their response: a public warning demanding the U.S. “stop flagrantly interfering in the elections and instead respect Honduran democracy.”
He went further on social media, claiming that “according to many people that I greatly respect,” Hernández was “treated very harshly and unfairly.”
This, of course, concerns a convicted drug trafficker, even as Trump ramps up his attacks on Venezuela. I’ll leave it to former Human Rights Watch executive director Ken Roth to point out the hypocrisy. His words capture behavior that continues to verge on the fascistic far better than mine.
Trump is, at the same time, taking calls with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro — a move some believe could lead to a calming of hostilities. However, Trump has also discussed increasing the military ante, including deploying ground troops and launching more sea strikes. Read more about the call and Trump’s possible plans on Venezuelanalysis. Their latest report offers insight into the call and what may lie ahead for Venezuela.
To return to the Trump administration and its involvement in Honduras, I now turn to Drop Site News and their in‑depth report on what’s happening with our leader and the Honduran election. By journalist José Luis Granados Ceja from the article
From this article, one key point bears repeating:
“It’s a blatant form of intervention that we haven’t seen in U.S. policy for a long, long time. It’s extremely worrisome in that context, but it’s also part of a much larger campaign on the part of the global far right of which Trump is a prime representative.” — Laura Carlsen, international election observer
