Honduras is facing a deep political crisis as President Xiomara Castro warns that an “electoral coup” is unfolding, accusing powerful business and political elites of trying to block her party from consolidating power ahead of the 2025 transition. She also alleges that Donald Trump’s allies are interfering behind the scenes, pressuring institutions and amplifying opposition claims in an effort to sway the outcome. The turmoil highlights long-running tensions between Honduras’s reformist government and conservative forces who have historically dominated the country’s political and economic system.
From the Guardian: At a press conference on Tuesday, Honduras’s president “condemned” Trump’s “interference … when he threatened the Honduran people that if they voted for a brave and patriotic candidate of the Liberal party, Rixi Moncada, there would be consequences”.
