Somalia has condemned Israel’s unprecedented recognition of Somaliland as a sovereign state, warning of a threat to territorial integrity and regional stability. Investigative reporting by Kit Klarenberg earlier this year highlighted the strategic and humanitarian stakes, including potential military bases and the relocation of displaced Gazans, raising alarm over what critics call a dangerous foreign intervention in the Horn of Africa.

Somalia Condemns Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland as a Threat to Sovereignty
With Al Jazeera reports that Somalia has launched a forceful diplomatic challenge to Israel after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government became the first in the world to formally recognize the breakaway region of Somaliland as an independent state. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud called the move a “naked invasion” and one of the most serious violations of Somali sovereignty in recent history, warning that it could import regional conflicts into the Horn of Africa and threaten stability.
.
In an emergency joint session of parliament in Mogadishu, the Somali news network reported that lawmakers unanimously passed a resolution declaring the recognition “null and void” under international law, affirming that Somaliland remains an “inseparable part” of the Federal Republic of Somalia. Mohamud urged Somalis to unite to defend the country’s territorial integrity and called on Somaliland’s leadership to engage in meaningful negotiations rather than pursue unilateral independence.
Somalia’s foreign ministry also demanded that Israel rescind its decision, condemning the recognition as “state aggression.” President Mohamud described Netanyahu’s move as the “greatest abuse” of Somalia’s sovereignty in the nation’s history, referring to Israel as an “enemy” and adding: “I am encouraging the Somali people to remain calm and to defend the unity and independence of our country, which is facing this naked invasion.”
Kit wrote about this back in April in a deep Substack report. Reading it now, it almost feels like psychic foresight. Some of the key takeaways from that report included
“Somaliland has become a focus of Western and Israeli interest not just as a breakaway state but as a potential site for relocating Palestinians from Gaza, a plan discussed discreetly by U.S. and Israeli officials”
“Recognition is not solely about diplomacy — Somaliland’s location makes it strategically attractive for military staging, especially for operations targeting Yemen or monitoring the Arabian Peninsula.”
“security forces have a record of violent crackdowns, including a brutal crackdown on protests in Las Anod that left dozens dead and displaced many more”
Klarenberg frames any plan to move Palestinians into Somaliland as more than resettlement: he warns it could resemble being placed “in yet another open‑air concentration camp” under foreign influence
There’s much more in this vital article, especially in the last few days as Israel moves forward with plans to use Somaliland as a base for military operations and potentially create another camp to house displaced Gazans. Read it:
