Tensions between Russia, Ukraine, and the United States escalated dramatically overnight as peace talks appear to be unraveling. Just yesterday, following meetings at Mar-a-Lago, President Trump offered an upbeat assessment, saying a deal was “maybe very close.” However, he also cautioned, “In a few weeks, we’ll know one way or another. It’s possible it doesn’t happen.” After today’s developments, the latter outcome now seems more likely.
Really, what a difference a day makes—the president said less than 24 hours ago that a peace deal was 95 percent done, while also noting that it might not happen. Here’s the video from yesterday for those who might have forgotten.
This because there have been unsubstantiated accusations that Ukraine attempted a drone strike on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residence. Russia’s allegations, however, remain unverified and have been strongly denied by Kyiv.
President Donald Trump voiced his anger over the alleged attack on Putin’s residence, which Russia says involved dozens of drones. Trump described the incident as “very angry” and expressed concern that the claims could jeopardize months of U.S.-led diplomatic efforts to bring peace to the region.
Ray McGovern, the renowned CIA analyst and frequent ScheerPost guest, tweeted alongside the Trump story, asking: Was Sunday’s attack on Putin’s residence a “complete fabrication” (as Zelensky claims) or a “Ukrainian terrorist attack” (as Putin told Trump)? Director of National Intelligence Gabbard knows the truth. Will Trump suppress it just to appease hawks like Rubio? TRUMP, TELL THE TRUTH.!
I just spoke with Ray this morning, and we’ll be arranging a call soon with him and Bob to discuss this issue. Perhaps because of everything happening daily, many haven’t been able to get to the heart of the matter. I’m looking forward to that conversation. At the end of this post, I’ll be adding a video from yesterday featuring Ray, titled “Ukraine: Can Trump and Putin Untie the Gordian Knot?”

To swing back to angry Russians Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian president and current member of Russia’s security council, issued a sharp warning to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. In a post on the social platform X, Medvedev accused Zelensky of “trying to derail the settlement of the conflict,” and ominously declared that Zelensky “will have to stay in hiding for the rest of his worthless life.”
The reports of the drone strike and the ensuing diplomatic fallout have deepened uncertainty over the fragile negotiations, with many in the international community watching closely for signs of either escalation or progress. Most are likely not holding their breath, because as accusations fly and rhetoric intensifies, the path toward a peaceful resolution remains precarious, highlighting the complexity and volatility of the conflict. Even the president can’t say whether a deal is “maybe very close” or if “it’s possible it doesn’t happen.” Needless to say, Trump has yet to fulfill his campaign promise of getting it done within 24 hours—at this rate, it may take 24 years.
Here is Ray McGovern on yesterday’s peace talks. For a deeper dive into the latest on Putin’s provocation, stay tuned to ScheerPost.com.
