Ken Klippenstein is a brilliant investigative journalist whose work exposes what legacy media often tries to erase. In this sharply observed Substack post, he details how NBC News quietly removed attribution to his reporting on a Justice Department directive targeting what it calls “radical gender ideology” and “anti‑Americanism.” What starts as a mordant personal anecdote becomes a wider critique of how corporate news outlets police legitimacy, marginalize independent reporting, and act as gatekeepers of public knowledge. Klippenstein’s account highlights a deepening crisis in journalism—one where power is less threatened by outright suppression than by selective acknowledgment.

It’s heartening to see independent journalists’ work picked up by mainstream outlets—especially in an era when those outlets often refuse to do the reporting themselves. But it would go a long way if they actually linked back to the original reporters. In today’s world, making a living as an independent journalist is nearly impossible, yet legacy media still acts as if proper attribution is optional. While intellectually engaged media recognizes the value of giving credit, corporate news giants seem determined to erase the very journalists whose work they rely on.
Editor’s Note: At a moment when the once vaunted model of responsible journalism is overwhelmingly the play thing of self-serving billionaires and their corporate scribes, alternatives of integrity are desperately needed, and ScheerPost is one of them.
