In one of the scariest moments in modern history, we're doing our best at ScheerPost to pierce the fog of lies that conceal it but we need some help to pay our writers and staff. Please consider a tax-deductible donation.

What happened to Alex Pretti should stop anyone who still believes the line between “public safety” and political policing is bright and uncrossable. As The Intercept reports, a volunteer EMT offering first aid at a protest found herself surrounded by federal agents, interrogated, and treated as a threat not because of anything she did, but because of what her presence symbolized: ordinary people refusing to surrender their rights in the face of state power.

With the Intercept reporting “The woman, a registered EMT whose credentials were confirmed by The Intercept, said in an exclusive interview that it was apparent Pretti had suffered serious injuries and needed medical help.

“I could tell the second that I laid eyes on him that he was horrifically injured,” the EMT recalled. “I immediately said, ‘I’m an EMT! He has a brain injury! He has a serious brain injury! I need to help him right now.’” adding “I was literally begging the agent who was holding me back to let me do CPR,” she told The Intercept in an exclusive interview.

This is the kind of story that cuts through the noise. No abstractions, no talking points — just the raw mechanics of a government willing to blur legal boundaries when dissent becomes inconvenient. And once again, the target wasn’t a violent actor or a security risk. It was a medic. A young woman whose “crime” was tending to injured protesters.

We highlight this reporting under fair use because it speaks directly to the themes we track every day: the criminalization of protest, the quiet expansion of federal authority, and the growing willingness to treat civic participation as suspicion. When first aid becomes evidence, when medics are treated like enemies, the message is unmistakable — and deeply dangerous.
