Live updates from the Middle East Monitor among others

“UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday said attacks launched by the US and Israel against Iran have affected several countries and pushed the region toward a critical breaking point”

UN experts have already described the attacks on Iran and Lebanon as “flagrant violations of international law.” Their warning is less about legal technicalities and more about precedent. When the world’s most powerful militaries act without consequence, the rules themselves begin to dissolve.

Yet today it was Iran that found itself on trial at the United Nations, as the United Nations Security Council debated the conflict and many members placed the blame squarely on Tehran.

Region pushed toward breaking point as US-Israeli strikes on Iran escalate

The Middle East is edging dangerously close to a wider regional war after the United States and Israel launched major military strikes against Iran, prompting warnings from international leaders that the conflict could spiral beyond control.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the attacks have already destabilized multiple countries and pushed the region toward what he described as a “critical breaking point.”

Speaking during an international event in Ankara, Guterres said the escalation risks igniting broader conflict across the Middle East while disrupting global trade, increasing energy prices and placing the greatest burden on vulnerable populations.

The strikes come amid growing evidence that the war is spreading beyond Iran’s borders.

Rising regional tensions

Iranian retaliatory operations have triggered widespread air defence activity across the Gulf.

The United Arab Emirates reported intercepting 278 ballistic missiles, 1,540 drones and 15 cruise missiles since Iranian attacks began late last month. Authorities said the attacks have killed six people and injured more than 130 others, including foreign nationals from multiple countries.

Meanwhile, Western military forces stationed in the region are increasingly exposed. Italy confirmed that a missile struck its military installation in Erbil in northern Iraq, although no casualties were reported. Rome has already begun reducing its troop presence due to the deteriorating security situation.

The growing volatility has prompted fears that the conflict could quickly draw in additional regional and international actors.

Lebanon increasingly drawn into conflict

Lebanon is also becoming a major flashpoint.

Israeli officials are reportedly considering launching a large-scale ground operation in southern Lebanon within days. According to Israeli media reports, the proposed operation would aim to seize territory and establish permanent deployment points along the border.

At the same time, Israeli air strikes inside Lebanon have already expanded the scope of the conflict.

In Beirut, a strike hit facilities belonging to the Lebanese University, killing two senior academics: faculty director Hussein Bazzi and Professor Mortada Srour. The attack has intensified concerns about the widening impact of the war on civilian infrastructure.

UN experts warn of international law violations

Several UN experts have condemned the military operations against Iran and Lebanon, describing them as “flagrant violations of international law.”

In a joint statement, the experts warned that the attacks risk setting a dangerous precedent in which powerful states operate with complete impunity.

They cautioned that the escalation could engulf the entire region in catastrophic violence if diplomatic intervention does not occur quickly.

Political tensions extend beyond the battlefield

The crisis is also producing political fallout far beyond the Middle East.

In Europe, Spain’s foreign minister rejected threats made by US President Donald Trump regarding possible trade retaliation against Madrid over policy disagreements related to the conflict.

Spanish officials warned that any economic pressure directed at Spain would effectively target the entire European Union due to the bloc’s shared trade policy.

Meanwhile, Trump stirred further controversy by commenting on Iran’s participation in the upcoming World Cup, stating that while the Iranian national team is technically welcome, it might not be safe for them to attend.

Global power shifts in the background

The conflict unfolds at a moment of broader geopolitical transformation.

Analysts increasingly argue that the world is moving toward a multipolar international system, where American dominance faces growing competition from rising powers.

China’s economic and technological growth and Russia’s willingness to wage large-scale war in Ukraine have reinforced the perception that the era of uncontested US hegemony may be coming to an end.

Within this shifting landscape, some observers believe Washington’s close military alignment with Israel risks entangling it in escalating regional conflicts at a moment when global power dynamics are already changing rapidly.

A widening war

With missile exchanges intensifying, military deployments expanding and diplomatic tensions rising across several continents, fears are mounting that the current confrontation between Iran, Israel and the United States could trigger a far larger regional war.

For now, international organisations and diplomats continue to warn that without immediate efforts to de-escalate, the Middle East may soon pass a point from which it becomes far more difficult to return.
