Recent reports indicate that the U.S. and Israeli military operations in Iran have inflicted significant damage on civilian infrastructure, contradicting official claims that only military targets are being hit.
Despite this, political leaders continue to frame the conflict as precise and strategically targeted. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated, “Unlike them, we’re hitting military targets,” attempting to differentiate the U.S. approach from the very attacks it criticizes. Yet data shows a grim reality: U.S. and Israeli strikes have already destroyed 281 medical centers and 498 schools across Iran, underscoring the civilian toll of the campaign.

Journalist Arron Mate highlighted one of the earliest targets: a girls’ elementary school. Since then, attacks have expanded to residential buildings, medical centers, energy infrastructure, and even a sports stadium that once hosted a Frank Sinatra concert. These assaults have caused widespread disruption and suffering among Iran’s civilian population. And Alan MacLeod added “US/Israeli attacks have already hit 281 medical centers and 498 Iranian schools.”
Reporting from the Iranian Red Crescent Society and Al Jazeera, attacks on #Iran by U.S. and Israeli forces have left more than 82,000 civilian structures damaged or destroyed. The affected sites include 62,000 homes, 281 medical centers, hospitals, and pharmacies, as well as 498 schools. Seventeen Red Crescent rescue points and 12 rescue vehicles were also damaged.
Pir Hossein Kolivand, head of the Iranian Red Crescent, emphasized that these attacks are “not merely destruction of buildings or vehicles, but direct assaults on the lifelines that save human lives.” Even schools and hospitals, normally protected under international law, have been hit, resulting in tragic civilian casualties.
Evidence suggests that the targeting of civilian sites is not always accidental. One of the earliest attacks struck a primary school in Minab, killing at least 175 people, most of them children. Experts warn that even if civilian structures are not the primary targets, destroying or damaging them may still constitute a war crime. As the conflict escalates, Iran’s energy infrastructure has also been deliberately targeted, including the South Pars Gas Field in mid-March, further heightening tensions and raising concerns about violations of international humanitarian law.
President Donald Trump weighed in on the conflict, declaring, “We’ve won this war in Iran.” Defense experts quickly pushed back, describing his statement as delusional given the scale of civilian harm and the ongoing military engagements.

As the campaign continues, the discrepancy between political messaging and the documented impacts on Iranian civilians raises urgent questions about accountability, the rules of engagement, and the human cost of this conflict.
