In one of the scariest moments in modern history, we're doing our best at ScheerPost to pierce the fog of lies that conceal it but we need some help to pay our writers and staff. Please consider a tax-deductible donation.

Sometimes you have to laugh when dealing with tragic outcomes and trying to bring new people into the struggle. In facing the absurdity of this situation and the response from our “Dear Leaders,” Saturday Night Live last night asked one of the important questions:

Michael Che joked, “I get that ICE agents are people, allegedly,” he said. “And they have a job to do. But at some point, while you’re pepper‑spraying old ladies or shooting at a nurse, do you ever stop and ask yourself, ‘Are we d—s?’”

“JD Vance criticized protesters confronting ICE officers, saying they should instead write an op-ed or argue about it on social media,” Che explained.

Showing a picture of MAGA protesters and their coup in 2021, Che added, “You know, just like these young scholars did on January 6th.”

This hypocrisy needs to be pointed out: we still have Kyle Rittenhouse, the acquitted shooter, discussing Minneapolis, while ICE is under scrutiny for its actions — including the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti — and potentially for hiring the Jan 6 “patriots.” Thus their need for masks.

There was more mockery in the cold open as well, with President Trump — played by James Austin Johnson — declaring, “After what all my little freaks and psychos at ICE have been doing, I need more distractions. Look, everything’s gold and shiny!”

Last week’s show came under fire because it didn’t air the below Weekend Update clip on the main broadcast — instead, the segment was released afterward as a bonus. The sketch ends by shifting to a video of an ICE agent slipping on ice, a sharp, biting visual that punctuates the show’s critique of federal enforcement. SNL cast member Tommy Brennan, from Minnesota, also talked about how nice people in his hometown are.

Satire is a powerful and important tool — Jon Stewart, for example, helped many understand the vile Iraq War. Here’s his clip from 12 days ago, commenting on the disparities between January 6 and January 7 of this year.
