The bipartisan consensus for expanding NATO remains strong as the House approved a resolution on Monday endorsing Sweden and Finland’s memberships in a vote of 394-18, with only Republicans voting in opposition.

On Tuesday, the Senate Armed Services Committee easily gave approval for Sweden and Finland’s NATO bids, setting up a vote in the Senate that could come as soon as next week. The Senate panel approved the measure by voice vote, with Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), a critic of NATO expansion, taking a neutral stance by voting “present.”

In order for the US to approve Sweden and Finland joining NATO, it needs to be ratified by two-thirds of the Senate. While there may be some Republicans that vote against the measure, it’s likely the effort to expand NATO will easily pass through the Senate.

NATO members signed the ascension protocols for Sweden and Finland at the end of June, which sends the approval for the Nordic nations’ NATO bids to each member’s legislature. Turkey has repeatedly warned that its parliament could block the two nations from joining if they don’t live up to an agreement signed at the end of June that led to Ankara lifting its objection to their NATO bids.

Finland shares an over 800-mile border with Russia, and its ascension into NATO would double the alliance’s frontier with Russia. Moscow has said it does not view Sweden and Finland joining the alliance as much of a threat but has warned it will respond to the expansion of NATO military infrastructure in the region.

The House Republicans who voted against expanding NATO further on Russia’s border are Reps. Thomas Massie (KY), Andy Biggs (AZ), Dan Bishop (NC), Lauren Boebert (CO), Madison Cawthorn (NC), Ben Cline (VA), Michael Cloud (TX), Warren Davidson (OH), Matt Gaetz (FL), Bob Good (VA), Marjorie Taylor Greene (GA), Morgan Griffith (VA), Tom McClintock (CA), Mary Miller (IL), Ralph Norman (SC), Matt Rosendale (MT), Chip Roy (TX) and Jefferson Van Drew (NJ).

  1. The entire “Squad” of fake progressives plus fake socialist Bernie voted for the pro-war, NATO expansion neocon crap. Useless Biden Kick-Me dolls, concubines of Raytheon and the Pentagon, damn all their eyes.

  2. Stupido. Instead of accepting realities of China’s eventual step into Numero Uno, the capitalists’ sharpen their teeth to “bombs bursting in air” while using our tax dollars to fuel their mercenary (oops, our military) troops with obscene weaponry toward a mass suicidal mechanized feast of mass conflagration. The Dollar is King! Hail! All Hail to the Dollar!!! My big Dollar!!! The Holy Dollar!! The American citizenry? Nah. I got my jet, 5 homes -2 above and 3 below earth’s surface, self-sustaining ranchos, and exclusive water rights. So what do I care about disintegrating roads, bridges, climate insanity, famine, forced mass migrations from scorched or ever flooded land. I got mine! And yours!

  3. As if we needed another illustration, this one demonstrates just how much the Democratic Party has become even the greater evil when it comes to foreign policy, imperialism and war-mongering. It’s as if, just as in Clinton’s day with ‘tough on welfare, tougher on crime’, the D’s are out to prove that THEY are the warrior-caste.

No more ‘love, peace and understanding’ from this crowd. So long, hope for any collaboration on global existential issues. Imperium über alles! Empire above all!

It also demonstrates just how weird the ‘left’ side of the aisle has become, when the most reactionary right part of the GOP has consistently outflanked them on the existential threat created by continuing hostility and aggression towards nuclear armed powers, wasteful military spending, etc.

Once, the Dems held at least the distinction of being ‘the lesser of the evils’ – and run on that basis they did.

Now that they’ve not only demonstrated their ineptitude and lack of principle on even the most basic proposals toward a bit more economic fairness to workers, or action on climate change, and a countering to the judicial roll-back of civil rights; and have actually championed sending much of the treasury to the defense contractors, just how can they cling to the pretense that they’re the lesser of evils in order to win votes from anyone but the most hard-core of their partisans?

  4. Recognize this as a very deliberate provocation, a direct threat to Russia. Watching the US/UK so vigorously push to provoke nuclear world war – ensuring our deaths – leaves us speechless.

  5. Congratulations Sweden and Finland, you are one step closer to winning the “I want to be consumed in a nuclear holocaust” game.

    You must be proud.

  6. I agree with NOT expanding NATO – it should never have been expanded in the first place – but see I am in terrible company with the roster of swamp things from the generally disgusting GOP.

    1. Left voices against NATO are being purposefully lumped in with Trumpoids, part of the Democrat neocon strategy to popularize war. and those ever-profitable death industries.

  7. I never heard an intelligent word coming from Sweden or Finland for their action. Perhaps I was asleep and it got past me. I thought these two countries were a step above. Apparently, I was wrong. Sweden was neutral all throughout the six years of the bloodbath of WWII when all of Europe was under the boot of Nazi Germany. It makes no sense that they would ally themselves with NATO now because of war in Ukraine which, in its scope, is limited. And Russia defeated Finland both in the Russo-Finish war of 1940 and in company with Romania, Hungary, Italy and Nazi Germany in WWII. Again, it makes no rational sense.

  8. Good!

The Russian threat of WW III should not be underestimated.

Kudos to progressive Democrats for recognizing that danger!

    1. Bilious nonsense.
“The Russian threat of WWIII” does not even make grammatical sense.
The Democrats are not progressive, they are neocon warmongers, owned and operated by war industries and the imperial foreign policy Blob.

  9. Former Green Greta, a Swedish citizen says:

How dare you Sweden to .join dirty NATO. Stop using war as pretext for destroying political stability and betraying green polices in Sweden.

But you won’t find her “wisdom” on front pages of MSM like it was in 2018. No more red carpets and splendid Yacht adventures, no more traveling circuses with political and ideological virginity on display. No more freak shows. Reality sips in.

As many former green child protégés used abused and finally discarded by MSM and globalists Greta dropped their handlers and started to grow up and think a little bit for herself.

Yes Greta, people are dying but not as much from global warming but because of western warmongering policies, inhumane treatment of their own people and sham of Wall Street concocted phony green agenda that is aimed at green enslavement and exuberant profits via pauperization of societies and effectively a genocide of poorest billions.
