ScheerPost was honored with three awards on Sunday at the Los Angeles Press Club’s Southern California Journalism Awards gala.
For the third consecutive year, first place in the press club’s editorial cartoon category was won by Dwayne Booth (Mr. Fish) for his illustration, “Bird in Hand,” which speaks to a troubling year for world peace with the continued Russian assault on Ukraine, followed by the Hamas attacks in Israel and Netanyahu’s genocidal response in Gaza. The cartoon accompanied Chris Hedges’ column “Exterminate All the Brutes.”
ScheerPost publisher Robert Scheer placed second in audio journalist of the year for “Scheer Intelligence,” his award-winning weekly KCRW-hosted podcast where he and his guests have discussed such topics as foreign relations, militarism and the threat of nuclear war, the peace movement, the criminal justice system, the economy, racial and gender bias, the unhoused crisis and many more. He was also a finalist in the press club’s “talk/public affairs” category for his interview with Jonathan Taplin, author of The Four Billionaires Who Want to Control the Universe”, and the “personality profile/interview over 10 minutes” for his “Nuclear War Imminent?” interview with retired Air Force Lt. Col. William J. Astore.
In addition, Pulitzer Prize winning weekly columnist Chris Hedges, with his consistent coverage of U.S. and world issues, was a finalist for “political commentary (national)” for his column “They Lied About Afghanistan. They Lied About Iraq. And They Are Lying About Ukraine.” and ScheerPost criminal justice reporter Victoria Valenzuela was a finalist for “investigative reporting — government related” for her months-long investigation, “Double Punishment: California Prisons Set Up Thousands of People to be Detained and Deported by ICE—Including Citizens.”
