Rep. Elise Stefanik’s path to the New York governor’s race is facing new challenges after former President Trump publicly praised newly-elected NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Stefanik has previously criticized Mamdani as part of her campaign messaging, but Trump described him as “very rational,” signaling a shift that could complicate her strategy. Observers note this may affect her appeal to moderates and independents in a statewide contest.
One only needs to look at what Laura Lommer wrote on X for context. Google describes her as “a far-right activist and conspiracy theorist who has become an influential, albeit unofficial, ally and ‘loyalty enforcer’ to Donald Trump. She has a direct line to the president and has successfully lobbied for the firing or resignation of numerous government officials she deemed disloyal.”
Elise responded doubling down on her attacks on Mamdani saying in the below Youtube interview
“He is a jihadist. This is an area where President Trump and I disagree. But what we all want to work toward is making New York more affordable and safe, and that’s where I have a very strong record and working relationship with the administration.”
This White House meeting has sparked reactions across the political spectrum. More coverage is coming from ScheerPost. Regardless, it has thrown the New York governor’s race for a curveball.
