Before bed I saw this and can’t help but think how great it is to at least topple the United States at something while that empire gears up and continues to wreak havoc around the world. In an incredibly trying year globally — and especially for Venezuela — this felt like a bright spot. Congrats, Venezuela.

In a moment that will live in Venezuelan sports history, the underdog South American nation defeated the United States 3–2 to capture its first‑ever World Baseball Classic championship in a dramatic final in Miami. Eugenio Suárez’s clutch ninth‑inning RBI double turned the tide and sealed the victory, leaving Team USA — for the second straight WBC final — wounded after a late collapse.

This triumph is more than just a baseball upset; it’s a symbolic rebuke of American dominance in sport and a reminder of how powerful passion and unity can be. The U.S. roster, filled with big names and built like a baseball blockbuster, looked like a sure winner — yet it was Venezuela’s heart and cohesion that prevailed. Infielder Maikel García was named tournament MVP, and pitcher Eduardo Rodríguez delivered strong innings to keep the U.S. bats mostly in check.

The celebration was immediate and emotional. Venezuelan players and fans alike were seen singing the national anthem on the field with tears in their eyes, and flags were waved proudly both in Miami and back home. It’s a story of persistence, preparation, and collective effort — a reminder that even against the machinery of U.S. sports celebrity, passion and teamwork can rewrite history.

While U.S. media leaned into the narrative of another “heartbreaking loss” for a heavily favored team, Venezuelans will remember this as a defining national moment, earned not through headlines or payroll, but through dedication to the game and fierce pride. This isn’t just a WBC title — it’s a historic victory for a country that hasn’t had a moment like this in decades, and a reminder that the global game truly belongs to anyone willing to play with heart.
