Hedges: Jesus, Endless War, and the Rise of American Fascism

The Democratic Party is hoping to thwart an election rout by running against the expected Supreme Court decision on abortion. This is depressingly all that is left of its political capital.
Mr. Fish — “With this Ring”

By Chris Hedges / Original to ScheerPost

The Democratic Party – which had 50 years to write Roe v Wade into law with Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama in full control of the White House and Congress at the inception of their presidencies – is banking its electoral strategy around the expected Supreme Court decision to lift the judicial prohibition on the ability of states to enact laws restricting or banning abortions.

I doubt it will work.

The Democratic Party’s hypocrisy and duplicity is the fertilizer for Christian fascism. Its exclusive focus on the culture wars and identity politics at the expense of economic, political, and social justice fueled a right-wing backlash and stoked the bigotry, racism, and sexism it sought to curtail. Its opting for image over substance, including its repeated failure to secure the right to abortion, left the Democrats distrusted and reviled.

The Biden administration invited Amazon Labor Union president Christian Smalls and union workers from Starbucks and other organizations to the White House at the same time it re-awarded a $10 billion contract to the union-busting Amazon and the National Security Agency (NSA) for cloud computing. The NSA contract is one of 26 federal cloud computing contracts Amazon has with the U.S. Army and Air Force, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of the Interior, and the Census Bureau. Withholding the federal contracts until Amazon permitted free and open union organizing would be a powerful stand on behalf of workers, still waiting for the $15 minimum wage Joe Biden promised as a candidate. But behind the walls of the Democratic Party’s Potemkin village stands the billionaire class. Democrats have failed to address the structural injustices that turned America into an oligarchic state, where the obscenely rich squabble like children in a sandbox over multibillion-dollar toys. The longer this game of political theater continues, the worse things will get.

The Christian fascists have coalesced in cult-like fashion around Donald Trump. They are bankrolled by the most retrograde forces of capitalism. The capitalists permit the stupidities of the Christian fascists and their self-destructive social and cultural wars. In exchange, the billionaire class gets corporate monopolies, union busting, privatized state, and municipal services, including public education, revoked government regulations, especially environmental regulation, and can engage in a virtual tax boycott.

The war industry loves the Christian fascists who turn every conflict from Iraq to Ukraine into a holy crusade to crush the latest iteration of Satan. The Christian fascists believe military power, and the “manly” virtues that come with it, are blessed by God, Jesus, and the Virgin Mary. No military budget is too big. No war waged by America is evil.

These Christian fascists make up perhaps 30 percent of the electorate, roughly equivalent to the percentage of Americans who believe abortion is murder. They are organized, committed to a vision, however perverse, and awash in money. John Roberts, Samuel Alito, Amy Coney Barrett, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, mediocre jurists and Federalist Society ideologues who carry the banner of Christian fascism, control the Supreme Court.

Establishment Republicans and Democrats, like George Armstrong Custer on Last Stand Hill, have circled the wagons around the Democratic Party in a desperate bid to prevent Trump, or a Trump mini-me, from returning to the White House. They, and their allies in Silicon Valley, are using algorithms and overt de-platforming to censor critics from the left and the right, foolishly turning figures like Trump, Alex Jones, and Marjorie Taylor Greene into martyrs. This is not a battle over democracy, but the spoils of power waged by billionaires against billionaires. No one intends to dismantle the corporate state.

The ruling class in both parties told lies about NAFTA, trade deals, “reforming” welfare, abolishing financial regulations, austerity, the Iraq war, and neoliberalism that did far more damage to the American public than any lie told by Trump. The reptilian slime oozes out of every pore of these politicians, from Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer to Biden, who backed the 1976 Hyde Amendment banning federal funding of abortions and in 1982 voted to support a constitutional amendment that would allow states to overturn Roe v Wade. Their hypocrisy is not lost on the public, even with their armies of consultants, pollsters, courtiers in the press, public relations teams and advertising agencies.

Marjorie Taylor Greene is clueless and unhinged. She claims Hillary Clinton was involved in a child mutilation and a pedophilia ring and several high-profile school shootings were staged. But weaponized, like Trump, she is a political cruise missile aimed straight at the heart of the discredited centers of traditional power.

Hate is the fuel of American politics. No one votes for who they want. They vote against those they hate. Black and brown marginal communities have suffered worse assaults than the white working class, but they have been defanged politically with militarized police that function as internal armies of occupation. The erosion of due process, the world’s largest prison system and the stripping away of all rights, including often voting rights because of felony convictions, as well as a loss of access to most social services and jobs, reduced them to a subsistence level on the lowest rung of America’s caste system. They are also the primary targets of Republican-sponsored voter suppression and redistricting.

The glue holding this Christianized fascism together is not prayer, although we will get a lot of that, but war. War is the raison d’être of all systems of totalitarianism. War justifies a constant search for internal enemies. It is used to revoke basic civil liberties and impose censorship. War demonizes those in the Middle East, Russia, or China, who are blamed for the economic and social debacles that inevitably get worse. War diverts the rage engendered by a dysfunctional state towards immigrants, people of color, feminists, liberals, artists, anyone who does not identify as a heterosexual, the press, antifa, Jews, Muslims, Russians, or Asians. Take your pick. It is a bigot’s smorgasbord. Every item on the menu is fair game.

I spent two years with the Christian right reporting and researching my book American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America. These Christian fascists have never hidden their agenda or their desire to create a “Christian” nation, any more than Adolf Hitler hid his demented vision for Germany in Mein Kampf. They prey, like all fascists, on the despair of their followers. They paint gruesome portraits of the end times when the longed-for obliteration of non-believers presages the glorious return of Jesus Christ. The battle at Armageddon, they believe, will be launched from the Antichrist’s worldwide headquarters in Babylon once the Jews again have control of Israel. The closer we get to Armageddon, the giddier they become.

These people believe this stuff, as they believe in QAnon or the election fraud that supposedly put Biden in office. They are convinced that a demonic, secular-humanist ideology propagated by the media, the United Nations, elite universities, the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the National Organization for Women, Planned Parenthood, the Trilateral Commission along with the US State Department and major foundations are seeking to destroy them.

Violence is embraced as a cleansing agent, a key component of any fascist movement. The Christian fascists do not fear nuclear war. They welcome it. The insane provocations of Russia by the Biden administration, including the decision to provide $33 billion in assistance to Ukraine, target ten Russian generals for assassination and pass on to Ukraine the intelligence to sink the Moskva, the guided missile cruiser that was the flagship of the Russian Black Sea fleet, supercharges the ideology of the Christian right. The marriage of the war industry, determined to make war forever, with the Christian fascists yearning for the apocalypse is terrifying.  Biden is sleepwalking us into a war with Russia and perhaps China. The Christian fascists will accelerate the bloodlust.

The political deformities we have spawned are not unique. They are the product of a society and government that no longer functions on behalf of the citizenry, one that has been seized by a tiny cabal, in our case corporate, to serve its exclusive interests. The airy promises politicians make, including the announcement by candidate Barack Obama that the first thing he would do in office was sign the Freedom of Choice Act, which during his eight years as president he never got around to doing, are worthless. The scheduled vote next week in the Senate on a bill asserting that abortions are legal in the United States, which is expected to be blocked by the Republican’s use of the filibuster, a Senate procedural rule that requires 60 votes to advance most legislation in the 100-member chamber, is another empty gesture.

We saw the consequences of this dysfunction in Weimar Germany and Yugoslavia, a conflict I covered for The New York Times. Political stagnation and economic misery breeds rage, despair, and cynicism. It gives rise to demagogues, charlatans, and con artists. Hatred drives political discourse. Violence is the primary form of communication. Vengeance is the highest good. War is the chief occupation of the state. It is the vulnerable and weak who pay.

NOTE TO SCHEERPOST READERS : There is now no way left for me to continue to write a weekly column for ScheerPost and produce my weekly television show without your help. The walls are closing in, with startling rapidity, on independent journalism, with the elites, including the Democratic Party elites, clamoring for more and more censorship. Bob Scheer, who runs ScheerPost on a shoestring budget, and I will not waver in our commitment to independent and honest journalism, and we will never put ScheerPost behind a paywall, charge a subscription for it, sell your data or accept advertising. Please, if you can, sign up at chrishedges.substack.com so I can continue to post my now weekly Monday column on ScheerPost and produce my weekly television show, The Chris Hedges Report.

  1. The Democratic Party’s hypocrisy and duplicity is the fertilizer for Christian fascism … so true, and one of your best articles, Chris.

LOL … MTG is a political cruise missile … good one.

The thing that troubles me about someone like MTG is that the press gives her so much attention, it actually increases her popularity with her supporters and gains her more. Ironically, in these irrational times, the more “unhinged” she becomes, the greater her political influence.

The other thing is that the term “Christian Fascism” is an oxymoron. But the so-called Christians fail to see that. Is there a way to lift the veil for all those devout Christians who faithfully attend their church services and functions. Is there a way to get to their pastors and leaders?

Probably not, because the so-called Christians in the Confederacy used the Bible to justify slavery, so the task seems hopeless.

    1. Yeah, that uh, Southern heritage. Or the divine right of kings. Never mind those pesky passages in Acts, so disturbing to the natural order of things.

For example, Acts 4:34-35. “There was not a needy person among them, for as many as had lands and houses sold them, bringing the proceeds and laying them at the feet of the apostles. Who gave to each as any had need.”

      Rank socialism. Tsk tsk.

    2. @Tom
If Jesus were resurrected today, so-called Christians would kill him. Christianity got perverted almost as soon as Jesus was killed, and its practice has little or nothing to do with his teachings. Christians like Hedges who actually follow what Jesus taught are rare to uncommon exceptions.

    3. Got news for ya. But for me and many other immigrants who despise the American right and its slavery history still support the anti-abortion end of the day. Contrary to what you pseudo-American leftists seem to think. The majority of us immigrants come from traditional left but still socially conservative societies. And be we Christian, Muslim, or other. One thing we overwhelmingly have in common is a rejection of the so-called new left that is prevalent in the Us and western nations. And it is this leftism that we reject. Regardless of its claims about being pro-immigrant.

      1. Yeah, that graph doesn’t take into account that there are more immigrants coming into this country than actual babies being born right now. Might want to take that into account before posting your propaganda.

  2. True Christians follow the monetary law of weights and measures, a law first referenced in the old testament and a law that could never come to fruition without the advent and the use of real-time pricing for market measurements. —>>> usd/oz

Congruence with reality is not only vital , it’s indispensable and unyielding in its rewards and its punishment for non-compliance.

The economy is a real-time event. We’re now on a new threshold for capabilities.

    1. How about just get rid of money, conserve resources, have a responsible number of people and treat all life as a short, sacred event. You seem to be pushing apologia for capitalism, i.e. if we could just have real time valuations, then the system would work. As Hedges warns of a perverse American fascism.

      1. @James
Exactly! The problem is not how little green pieces of paper are moved around, it’s that money exists ti begin with (credit to Douglas Adams). If you focus your life and/or thoughts on money, you are part of the problem, regardless of whether you’re left, right, or whatever.

  3. We are so massively and irrevocably screwed. The ego mind is the most destructive force ever unleashed on this planet, and the collective ego mind of the US and the West has gone full on insane. I see no daylight. None at all….

    1. @JustAMaverick
I’m trying to figure out how to disagree with that. Not having any luck so far.

  4. I can’t believe I am saying this to anything written by Chris Hedges, who is one of my heroes, but this analysis of the Christian right seems to me to be completely out of touch . It might have been true ten years ago or so, or truer, but it certainly is not true now. It makes me wonder how much contact Mr. Hedges has had with Christian evangelicals lately. At any rate, Christian evangelicals have never been more anti-war, less fascist and less nationalistic than they are right now. Two things made this happen: their experience with Trump in the White House, and their experience of the pandemic. As a result, they are completely awake to the corporate capture of government, health care, media and virtually all aspects of our daily lives. They are aware that they have been manipulated by propaganda their whole lives, and that the state right now consists of an unholy alliance between giant globalist corporations, the security agencies, and the war machine. They have never had more in common with the left than they do right now.

    1. Dynamics have indeed changed. But I think what you perceive as enlightened awakening is in actuality simply opposition to whom they perceive as their enemy. I believe that they would gladly impose the same restrictions, would gladly strip away the same fundamental human and constitutional freedoms if it was on their terms, serving their own agenda, and not somebody else’s.

I would love to be wrong because I see no moral high ground…anywhere.

    2. Oh they’re still steeped in propaganda alright. I have family in the former confederate states, many still believe 1) blacks had it great under slavery, even better than they had it in Africa, 2) dropping not 1 but 2 A-bombs on Japan during WWII was not just necessary but righteous, 3) Trump was one of the better presidents of the modern era, 4) Sodom & Gomorrah were destroyed only because of homosexuality (never mind that these two cities’ sin was nothing compared to America’s), 5) the Covid vaccine IS the delta variant, 6) black people on welfare are lazy and deserve poverty, and so on. Yeah still way too many continue clinging to lies. They’re not asleep, just hopelessly lost.

And it’s not just the Boomers. There are younger generations who still believe this garbage. I’m sorry, I can’t get into any kind of left-right alliance with those who believe in such utter lies to the point it’s warped them. This isn’t opinion, these people believe in flat-out lies.

  5. Likely path of events:

Having no way to overrule voter suppression laws in the states, the Democrats will lose. Millions of people will not accept this outcome as legitimate.

Intoxicated fascist radicals will pass laws that overrule all the advances made since Brown vs. Board of Education, maybe that one also.

Armed uprisings against all of this are inevitable.

Much of the rest of the world will be happy to see the US mired in civil conflict and analysis. Maybe some of those soldiers will need to come home to restore order: their ranks are full of white nationalists and neo-fascists.

The possibility of de facto separation into hostile statelets is imaginable: all that’s needed are a number of states to imitate DeSantis’ creation of his own militia and defy federal statutes. . No one will pay much attention to laws and decrees of a judiciary that has been totally discredited. Force will be the political currency.

    1. Dmitri Orlov called this one a while back. He also recently moved back to Russia at a propitious time, AFAIK.

“Social collapse best practices” was a lot more amusing 15? years back. The predictions of USA empire’s trajectory eventually matching that of the former USSR, down into dissolution and chaos was comfortably way, way off in the future…

  6. Ahh, you can’t go halfway with these wicked religions and their wicked service manuals and playbooks. And then, these wicked religions have wicked followers who listen to the wicked interpreters and secret society kings who have them in their clutches.

Then, those old time religions are all about money,, too . . . shekels then, shekels now, and those Benjamins. This is the evil of money, too — you can’t be just half a capitalist. It’s all about dog-eat-dog, suvival of the fittest, those with the most money rule. Who will get the money.

Hedges seems to just blame billionaires, not the multimillionaires, the Eichmann’s, the service workers for the oligarchs. I’d say Pelosi, with several hundred million is the same as Adam Sandler or other freaks in Holly-Dirt, err, like, Sean Penn or Tom Hanks, et al. They are the enemy. Money from the oligarchs and the systems of oppressing us, the 80 percent.

It all makes sense — Old Time Religion

    Leviticus 20:13 ESV
If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.

    Genesis 1:27 ESV
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

The playbook, man, that’s what the good book predicts, so, if you believe, then you are part and parcel that:

Book of Revelation, the Apostle John sees the “beast,” also called the Antichrist, rising out of the sea having seven heads and ten horns (Revelation 13:1). Combining this vision with Daniel’s similar one (Daniel 7:16-24), we can conclude that some sort of world system will be inaugurated by the beast, the most powerful “horn,” who will defeat the other nine and will begin to wage war against Christians. The ten-nation confederacy is also seen in Daniel’s image of the statue in Daniel 2:41-42, where he pictures the final world government consisting of ten entities represented by the ten toes of the statue. Whoever the ten are and however they come to power, Scripture is clear that the beast will either destroy them or reduce their power to nothing more than figureheads. In the end, they will do his bidding.

John goes on to describe the ruler of this vast empire as having power and great authority, given to him by Satan himself (Revelation 13:2), being followed by and receiving worship from “all the world” (13:3-4), and having authority over “every tribe, people, language and nation” (13:7). From this description, it is logical to assume that this person is the leader of a one-world government which is recognized as sovereign over all other governments. It’s hard to imagine how such diverse systems of government as are in power today would willingly subjugate themselves to a single ruler, and there are many theories on the subject. A logical conclusion is that the disasters and plagues described in Revelation as the seal and trumpet judgments (chapters 6-11) will be so devastating and create such a monumental global crisis that people will embrace anything and anyone who promises to give them relief.

Once entrenched in power, the beast (Antichrist) and the power behind him (Satan) will move to establish absolute control over all peoples of the earth to accomplish their true end, the worship Satan has been seeking ever since being thrown out of heaven (Isaiah 14:12-14). One way they will accomplish this is by controlling all commerce, and this is where the idea of a one-world currency comes in. Revelation 13:16-17 describes some sort of satanic mark which will be required in order to buy and sell. This means anyone who refuses the mark will be unable to buy food, clothing or other necessities of life. No doubt the vast majority of people in the world will succumb to the mark simply to survive. Again, verse 16 makes it clear that this will be a universal system of control where everyone, rich and poor, great and small, will bear the mark on their hand or forehead. There is a great deal of speculation as to how exactly this mark will be affixed, but the technologies that are available right now could accomplish it very easily.

Those who are left behind after the Rapture of the Church will be faced with an excruciating choice—accept the mark of the beast in order to survive or face starvation and horrific persecution by the Antichrist and his followers. But those who come to Christ during this time, those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life (Revelation 13:8), will choose to endure, even to martyrdom.

Oh, that’s right — Jews and Zionists!

The Jewish equivalent of the bible is the Torah. But this needed explaining and interpreting. The Jews did this by oral tradition for about 1,500 years. However around the year 200 AD they started writing it down. This is the Talmud. It is huge, 6,200 pages in standard print. And it is the basis of Jewish law. The Zionists carefully extracted from the Talmud all those bits that supported their creed, but ignored everything in the Talmud that goes against their creed. As a result many Jews see Zionism as being non Jewish or even anti Jewish. Certainly very much of what the Zionists do would be considered illegal if the Talmud was observed correctly.

Midrasch Talpioth, p. 225-L Jehovah created the goyim in human form so that the Jew would not have to be served by beasts. The goyim is consequently an animal in human form, and condemned to serve the Jew day and night.

Sanhedrin 57a . When a Jew murders a goyim, there will be no death penalty. What a Jew steals from a goyim he may keep.

Baba Mezia 114b The goyim are not humans. They are beasts.

Baba Kamma 113a. Jews may use lies to circumvent a goyim.

Abodah Zarah 36b. Goyim girls are in a state of niddah (filth) from birth.

Menahoth 43b-44a. A Jewish man is obligated to say the following prayer every day: “Thank you God for not making me a goyim, a woman or a slave.”

Sanhedrin 57a . A Jew need not pay a goyim the wages owed him for work.

Baba Mezia 24a . If a Jew finds an object lost by a goyim it does not have to be returned.

Abodah Zarah 22a-22b . Goyim prefer sex with cows.

Libbre David 37 Â To communicate anything to a goyim about our religious relations would be equal to the killing of all Jews, for if the goyim knew what we teach about them, they would kill us openly.

Schulchan Aruch, Choszen Hamiszpat 156 When a Jew has a goyim in his clutches, another Jew may go to the same goyim, lend him money and in turn deceive him, so that the goyim shall be ruined. For the property of a goyim, according to our law, belongs to no one, and the first Jew that passes has full right to seize it.

Hadarine, 20, B; Schulchan Aruch, Choszen Hamiszpat 348 A Jew may do to a non-Jewess what he can do. He may treat her as he treats a piece of meat.

    cRAZY RELIGION$ . . . . .

Some biblical scholars are warning against a new guide published by a prominent gay rights organization geared toward evangelicals who identify as LGBT, saying it amounts to “false teaching.”

Last week, the Washington-based Human Rights Campaign released “Coming Home to Evangelicalism and to Self,” a 32-page guide containing resources, advice, and testimonials for evangelical Christians who are “on the journey toward living fully in their sexual orientation, gender identity and expression and in their faith and its traditions,” according to its website.

The guide features personal stories and practical suggestions from what they call a “wide variety of evangelical voices” in order “to spark new ideas, new dialogue and new courage,” citing recent surveys and polling data showing rising support for same-sex marriage among younger generations.

Other theologians who’ve long contended for the biblical definition of marriage being between one man and one woman and accompanying sexual ethics, are urging Christians to discern and resist the ideas set forth in the booklet.

Denny Burk, professor of theology at Boyce College, opined on Twitter Thursday that it’s important for Christians and other observers to recognize that those in the HRC guide and group itself are “false teachers who are leading people away from Jesus.”

“These teachers ‘have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ,” he added, referencing Jude 1:4.

Love demands that Christians expose and oppose this “grave error,” Burk continued.

“The revisionists and false teachers are leading sinners away from this grace and leaving them to languish in that from which they need to be delivered. If we love these dear people as Christ does, we must oppose the wolves and make clear the path to life.”

“We would also do well to pray for the wolves, that ‘perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will,” he said, citing 2 Timothy 2.

Which religious “thing,” point, passage confirm to Chris that the Judea-Christian-Abrahamic version of laws and regulations are truly true, and those that are violent, racist, hateful, are not?

    1. An excellent illustration of the correctness of communist parties to strive for the obliteration of religion and inculcation of atheism in the masses.

      1. To alteyid48 below, since for some reason no reply is attached to is posting.

Anyone who cals Marxism a “religion” is an ignoramus.

      2. @BabaYaga
Any ideology can be used as a religion, even science. Of course Marxism is not a religion, but it can be used that way, such as failing to question its assumptions and conclusions. This is not to opine one way or the other on Marxism and alteyid48 is just a troll on this site, but we have to be careful to not use our ideologies religiously, which means always questioning them just like we question the ones with which we disagree.

      3. Tru e … I was responding to the kind of tedious clichè we encounter all the time.

      4. Wow – early on in the screed above – the absolutely anachronistic pairing of the blather with the phrase, “…logical to conclude…”

The utterly fantastical pairing of biblical passages in a pretzel-like contortion of imaginary dots being somehow logical – and logically connected, is dizzying and horrifying and emblematic of the power of the radicalization methods necessary to warp a cultists malleable brain to go forth into the world to propagate utter bullshit – the same as Isis, the same as the Q-baggers. They are lost to us sane folks here on Earth 1, but never more empowered nor dangerous. And it is Mother Nature herself who will be the final arbiter of the most advanced yet ridiculously dangerous species yet known. It is we who need saving – not ‘the planet’.

      5. @Joe Paulet
As to the human species: Humans could have been the shining light on this planet. Instead, we’ve made ourselves into a cancerous tumor on it (by medical definition, not just my opinion). If we had focused on wisdom, empathy, and expanding our consciousness instead of ego, materialism, intellect, and unnaturally and very harmfully manipulating the physical/natural world, things on Earth would be great right now. Instead, we’re causing a mass extinction, have polluted every bit of land, air, and water with unnatural crap, have so overpopulated the Earth that other species basically have nowhere to live, are acidifying the oceans, are wrecking our atmosphere, have destroyed over 90% of native ecosystems, have killed over 90% of megafauna on land and in the oceans, etc. Didn’t have to be this way and maybe still doesn’t but we need a total reversal of human attitudes and behaviors in order to have any chance to set things right. Otherwise, as you said, Nature will set things right instead, and it will be far more painful than if we do it.

  7. Yet again, Hedges rails against Christian Fascists, the Dems, the Republicans but never offers a solution. His endless doom and gloom creates its own anger and despair. He mentions Chris Smalls going to the WH to meet Biden but won’t point out how naive and ignorant Smalls is for going to meet a man who is a cheerleader for the union bureaucracies and has zero interest in the working class. Smalls wasted no time saddling up to Sean O’Brien, the Teamster’s President, selling the ALU out to a thug. Hedges, Smalls, the union bureaucracy, and all of the pseudo-progressive left are nothing more than capitalist reformers. They have all thrown their hands up and given up on Marx’s historical materialism and believe that capitalism is the final solution and that we must all do our best to reform it. There is no capitalist reformation coming. There is no ” altruistic ” capitalism. There is only the endless and futile pursuit of profit at the expense of the international working class who will be used as labor and cannon fodder for that pursuit. Until the global overthrow of capitalism is implemented by the international working class around the world and the means of production and distribution of labor is dictated by that international working class, all other avenues will be ground to mulch in the cogs of the capitalist machinery.

    1. Great people coming together:

Conscious of the many implications of a new strengthening of right-wing groups and narratives in Croatia, MAZ uses the space provided by the Day of Liberation of Zagreb to highlight the importance of joining forces to defy them. This year, the commemoration program included workshops by feminist and LGBTIQ group, climate justice activists, as well as cultural networks and choirs.

For the first time since the bonfires were revitalized, the commemoration was attended by representatives of the city administration. Recently elected mayor Tomislav Tomašević (Možemo) gave a speech in which he noted that the units that liberated Zagreb did so on the wings of social justice, faith in equality and internationalism, values that the people of Zagreb should continue to hold on today in the face of new crises.

“Fascism has not disappeared. We find it in the inhumane and unjust capitalist system which, year after year, ruthlessly deepens social inequalities. Because of this, workers feed their households with less than 4000 kuna (approx. USD 560) per month, senior citizens are forced to scavenge secondary raw materials in between pension payments, and students do two jobs in addition to studying to support themselves and their families,” said the organizers.

Even in this situation, the ruling elites are not backing from the road taken, announcing a new economic crisis that will bring new increases in energy costs and basic food prices. Like in other countries of the EU, the effects of the EU’s approach to the war in Ukraine and the impending economic crisis will have the strongest impact on workers. In absence of a strong alternative coming from the left, this is likely to open new grounds for right-wing movements and push Europe towards a very dark period of its history.

“Today, we stand here to say that the society in which we want to live in is based on political, social and economic equality, as well as solidarity with all. Our coordination and unity are the first and decisive steps on that path. As we light this year’s bonfires, we show gratitude to our predecessors who fought so we could stand free in this place today. We owe it to them, and to ourselves, to gather every year on Liberation Day and say loudly: Death to fascism – freedom to the people!” concluded MAZ declaration.

    2. Marx had an interesting analysis at the beginning of the industrial revolution. There won’t be an overthrow of capitalism by the international working class. That understanding is archaic. The advancement of science and technology is making work almost obsolete and a class of workers near meaningless. Capitalism and Communism have outlived their usefulness.

    3. The logical takeaway from Hedges’ valuable insights is precisely what you say: non-negotiable destruction of international capitalism, necessarily in its American nucleus.

I’ll take him at his word that he wants to avoid having the revolution turn to what ALL really basic radical revolutions do — remove and at least partial obliterate the former ruling classes.

Usually, they fight back, they lose and they suffer the consequences.

That’s a point of disagreement but his analysis is not “doom” — it’s fairly accurate and does not lead, in my view, to Jesus or Buddha. I’m not going to try to psychoanalyze him, just point that 2+2 = 4, not Kumbaya, even if that’s what he’d prefer.

To arrive, eventually — at humanism — will require some extremely non-humanistic acts and events.

Today’s French Republic was not the result of tolerance and forgiveness.

“Let their blood soak into the dirt…”

      Lyrics for our time . . .

Capitalism needs to be ended with the same uncompromising ferocity it used to establish itself.

Personally, after we obliterate the capitalists, I’ll consider therapy . . .

      1. @BabaYaga
There are people who comment here who clearly don’t like Hedges, and one of the things they say is that he doesn’t offer solutions. This is just propaganda. Journalists and opinion writers are not supposed to offer solutions, they’re supposed to report and comment on issues. This lame complaint that Hedges doesn’t offer solutions in reality just means that Kurt doesn’t like what Hedges has to say.

      2. Right. And he does urge the formation of organized movements, such as unions and collective action.

  8. “The Democratic Party’s hypocrisy and duplicity is the fertilizer for Christian fascism.”

In America we value the fact that we get to have freedom of choice.

So it is with Fascism. We get to choose which version of Fascism we want to live under… ‘Christian’ or otherwise. Religious fascism… Secular fascism… the choices are limitless. We get to choose! The Land of Plenty. The Fount of Freedom. The Freedom to choose which version of tyranny we want to live under and which jailkeepers get to keep watch over us.

The Left can promote their version of fascism. The same with the Right. And of course, there is always those imported brands of fascism either from history or current versions being practiced around the World that some Americans are salivating for.

Like the old political cartoon: We the Herd are all being forced down the ramp to one big fascist pen… but we get to choose and fight over which doorway in we want to enter by!

“Democrats have failed to address the structural injustices that turned America into an oligarchic state, where the obscenely rich squabble like children in a sandbox over multibillion-dollar toys.”

Democrats are the fetch-dogs of that very same obscenely rich oligarchic state. You do not question those who throw you your daily bone or who walk you down to the fire hydrant. You beg… roll over… play nice… pine to be pet…look up with pleading eyes… and have your doggie bowl filled regularly you hope.

“Hate is the fuel of American politics.”

Hate is the fuel of a deranged maniac. It is the opposite of healthy living and thinking. It is an abomination of the true human spirit. It is the Vulture Class victory over We the People. It is turning human beings into monsters. If the Elitist Vulture Class are our keepers and We are mere animals… it is the Vultures who take delight in torturing their animals and the animals who have grown accustomed to it and just want that attention after a while from their Deranged Keepers. The animals who get used to being kicked and yelled at.

“The glue holding this Christianized fascism together is not prayer, although we will get a lot of that, but war.”

A Christian flavor of fascism is a perversion of Jesus’ message. It is taking a horribly corrupted message and wrapping it up with a bow and a cross and a faux spiritual superiority.

So when you have a perverted message or agenda… wrap it up in the ‘flag’ or ‘the cross’ and package it to a gullible and badly misguided flock of confused and desperate sheep.

Or as for message and agenda… today, just let the Department of Fatherland Disinformation and Propaganda Creation and Dispersion order you what to believe and be done with it. Saves time for everyone.

“War is the chief occupation of the state. It is the vulnerable and weak who pay.”

War is the farthest along on the spectrum of thuggery and bullying. It is the raw force strong-arm that justifies itself without the messiness of debate or fair play or ethics or morality. War is always the heartbeat and default setting of the ruling classes because without thuggery they have… nothing.

And the weak ALWAYS pay. Such is life on a Jungle Planet.

  9. A few notes: “reptilian slime” : Reptiles have dry skin, not a good metaphor. I think that “molluskan slime” would be much better, slugs being mollusks and all, that leave a trail of slime where ever they go. Come to think of it- how do they keep the legislative chambers so clean that nobody slips and falls.

Next: Mr. Fish used the Celtic cross or four directions symbol on his skeleton drawing. That is a direct assault on Indigenous and old Celt spirituality. Bad choice. This symbol existed a long time before christianty. Christian oligarchs took over this symbol to prevent a resurgence of a more natural, less hierarchical form of ceremonial worship.

“God created man in his own image”. No, no, no! It was Coyote that did that because it was gods day off.

Lastly, the people should rise up and make the senators and representatives work on a chain gang planting trees. Say about 10 million trees. That way they would really help the climate crisis and get used to doing some real labor for a change.

  10. Endless war, for sure. AFRICOM:

The U.S. has been waging wars in Africa since the 1950s. The creation of the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) in 2008 is only the logical development of a process of control meant to deny Africans democracy, self-determination and dignity.

Troops trained by AFRICOM have been behind nine coups d’etat on the African continent in the thirteen years of the military command’s existence. All but one of the G5 Sahel countries have experienced a coup in that period, and the military training that the U.S. and France provide to troops in these countries through the various AFRICOM exercises and the French Foreign Legion among other installations, present a serious concern. A 2017 study using data from 189 countries shows that greater numbers of military officers trained by the U.S. Military increase the probability of a military coup, and as Netfa Freeman wrote previously , AFRICOM serves as a “coup incubator” by emboldening a military class on the African continent that the U.S. can’t control.

Then, there are the rabbinical thieves, the Larry Finks of the world, and then those Anglo Oxfordians, those Klanadians, too:

A major investor in Barrick Gold is BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager operating out of Wall Street.

Its founder and CEO, Laurence Fink, was a donor to Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer and John Kerry, along with Paul Ryan and other Republican and Democratic Party politicians who supported the expansion of AFRICOM.

BlackRock is also a major investor with J. P. Morgan Chase in First Quantum Minerals , which owns 80% of the Kansanshi mine in Zambia’s Copperbelt, the largest mine in Africa, along with the Sentinel mine in Kalumbila.

BlackRock further invested in Glencore and Vedanta Resources, which own additional Zambian copper mines and, like the others, have checkered records when it comes to workers’ rights and the environment.

    +–+

The fascism is, of course, financial, corporate, mining, chemicals, land-food-water theft. All that fascism is facilitated through military operations.

These are dirty filthy fascists, for sure: Fomenting death and destruction, here, there and everywhere.

    Quoting:

Emmanuel Mwamba, Zambia’s former representative to the African Union (AU), had tried to block AFRICOM’s expansion into Zambia, following the precedent of Zambia’s last four presidents (Levy Mwanawasa, Rupiah Banda, Michael Sata and Edgar Lungu).

Mwamba emphasized that, since obtaining its independence from Great Britain in 1964, Zambia has promoted a non-aligned policy and cooperated with all powers, including Russia and China as well as the U.S.

‘Victory over death itself’: Why the 9th of May is so important for Russians
77 years after World War Two, Victory Day is regarded as the country’s most important holiday
By Evgeny Norin, a Russian historian focused on Russia’s wars and international politics

May 9 is a special holiday for Russians, and the great attention we pay to this date often seems unusual to people from other countries and cultures. Indeed, to say that “for Russians, the Second World War ended yesterday,” it is not far from the truth.

Evgeny Dering was a veterinarian who treated horses. He lived in St. Petersburg, which was then called Leningrad. On June 22, 1941, he went off to war. Before he left, he asked his wife Regina to take their children – two daughters and a son just born in April – and leave for the depths of Russia. As it turned out, this request saved their lives. A few days later, Regina took her children to the village of Makarevo, in the Nizhny Novgorod oblast (then Gorky), and settled in a 15th century convent that had been set up as a shelter for refugees like her. More than 600,000 Leningrad residents died of hunger during the great siege of the city. Regina survived, as did all her children, but she never saw her husband again. In October of 1943, Evgeny Dering was killed by artillery shelling at a small marshy bridgehead on the Dnieper River…

For Russians, Victory Day is literally a celebration of victory over death – one in which everyone was involved. Almost every family has a story about what their ancestors did during the war. These stories vary greatly, but they are almost always dramatic. Many have tales about people who died. The Soviet Union lost more than 27 million people during the war. About 12 million were soldiers and officers, while the rest were civilians who died at the hands of the Nazis during the fighting or from hunger. By the time Berlin had been taken and Adolf Hitler had committed suicide in his bunker in 1945, the USSR was a country where almost everyone mourned someone. A person who had lost ‘only’ friends was considered lucky.

The Nazis waged war with extreme brutality. Jews were never spared, but nothing good awaited anyone else either. A Belarusian government database contains the names of 9,000 villages that were burned by the invaders during the war, and this was only in one of the Soviet Union’s occupied republics. In many of the destroyed hamlets, the number of victims is often identical to, or nearly matches, the number of their inhabitants, at the time. The most common method of extermination was to drive the population into a barn and set it on fire. People also died from shelling and starvation or were simply callously shot. Criminal acts committed against the civilian population were exempt from accountability under a special order issued by Hitler.

A red cross provided no protection during the war – ambulances and ships were often destroyed by direct fire. No allowances were made for age either – children were killed on a par with adults.

However, for us, the war is not just a story of monstrous cruelty. It is a legend of incredible national unity, where an ordinary worker and a world-renowned composer could converge in a volunteer fire brigade, and a young bohemian from Moscow could share bread with a miner from the Donbass and an Asian conscript from a Kazakh steppe village in a trench. It is a story of the remarkable ability not to give up when all circumstances seem to be against you and resistance seems futile. After each lost battle, the surviving officers would analyze their failures and try to figure out what they had done wrong and how to change the situation. It is a story of amazing self-sacrifice, when recruiting volunteers for a new division resembled a competitive university admissions process.

And it is a story about military triumph. The Third Reich was a deadly enemy. The five-million strong invading army reached the Caucasus mountains and threatened to take Moscow and Leningrad, but nevertheless ended up being defeated. For us, it is a story about how we shed torrents of blood, but the army that came to kill us was completely destroyed, the enemy capital was taken by storm, the dictator who ordered the invasion committed suicide, and the banners of the losing army were thrown against the walls of the Kremlin. We paid a terrible price, but our triumph was absolute.

In Russia, you rarely hear people say ‘World War II’. The term formulated in those times, ‘The Great Patriotic War’, is still in use today. This is not an attempt to somehow disregard what the Second World War was for others, but a desire to emphasize that, for us, it is still a kind of special event that goes beyond an ordinary armed conflict. For us, it is a truly heroic epic. It is the Iliad, a number of whose heroes are still alive and walking among us today. They are very old now, and yet some are still here. Our Ajax still sometimes goes out into his yard in the evenings, jingling medals for storming Vienna, to sit on a bench; our Diomedes can be seen every morning walking his dog.

  11. “Oh, ther horror . . . the horror.”

This is it for USA, the country of fine-tax-triple tax-toll-penalize-ticket-late fee-interest charge-theft-rape-razing.

So, we have fires all over the place. We’re proud of a Railway system that looks like Bulgaria’s, 1950s. Lead in the pipes. Zoom doom for schools, board meetings, everything. Prison state. School to prison pipeline. School to penury pipeline. Decaying schools, city councils and county boards. Elites fleecing the world. More and more out-of-control housing shortages (affordable) and more and more house flippers. Construction outfits charging $175 an hour, and up, for patching old ladies’ roofs, who are on fixed-incomes. This is it for USA.

This is what we, USA, exports . . . death, financial, cultural, austerity, death!

    Quoting:

President Joe Biden on Monday signed the Lend-Lease Act of 2022 into law. The Act, previously used to arm the Allies of World War II, will expedite American arms shipments to Ukraine, and has been warmly welcomed in Kiev.

Speaking as he signed the act at the White House, Biden vowed to continue arming the Ukrainians “in their fight to defend their country and their democracy.” He added that “the cost of the fight is not cheap but caving to aggression is even more costly.”

The act, which passed Congress last month with 417-10 votes in the House and no dissent in the Senate, suspends limitations on the quantity of weapons and other military supplies Biden can send to Ukraine or “other Eastern European countries,” although it stipulates that Kiev must subsequently pay for whatever it receives.

That Biden chose May 9 to sign the WWII-era act was likely deliberate, considering that this date is celebrated as ‘Victory Day’ annually in Russia and a number of former Soviet countries, commemorating the defeat of fascism at the end of the Second World War.

Biden referred to the defeat of Nazi Germany during the signing ceremony on Monday, but did not mention Victory Day. Instead he noted that the European Coal and Steel Community, which would expand into the European Union, was formed on May 9, 1950.

    1. NATO now officially claims that it was never against Russia. However, in fact it was from beginning in 1949 as its creation was prompted by fear stemming from first Russian nuclear bomb test. NATO was never conceived as deterrent to Warsaw Pact as it was created only as a response to West Germany joining NATO in 1955 against vehement objections of Russia and eastern bloc in UN .

The Iron curtain was not as Churchill said, dropped over Eastern Europe by communists but it was pulled down by western capitalists.

The European Coal and Steel Community(ECSC) precursor to EC and EU was economic part of western made iron curtain as it amounted to aggressive near total sanctions and embargo against entire Eastern Bloc cutting historical political, cultural and economic connections across Europe driven by misguided fear and hatred of Eastern Europeans who were not supporters of Stalin and in fact most rejected Soviet economic model and retained private property and local market economy to differing degrees.

In Poland 70% of land was in private hands and only 70% of economy was generated by state owned enterprises. It was similar percentage of state owned or controlled enterprises as in west Germany (65%), Austria and Scandinavia at 60%.

It was the west who was European divider and separatist and it happened only because of fear of spreading socialist/communist ideology in the west. After war Western Europe was a verge of takeover by western communist/socialist parties in Italy, France Belgium etc., which won elections 1945-1949. The compromised by Nazi collaboration, corrupted western bourgeois political parties and states responded with brutal military suppression of electoral results and ensuing civil unrest and workers strikes.

Until 1949 Stalin tolerated political diversity in Eastern Europe allowing western backed parties to run in elections.

Only because of mass attack on communists in the west in violation with Yalta agreements Stalin felt released from obligation to keep western style democracy in Eastern Europe and ordered to clumping down on opposition to communist rule in 1948-49 and establishing so called socialist constitutions and states embedding into law such communist things like legal abortion and free contraception, child care, free healthcare and education at all levels, guarantee of employment, prohibiting usury meaning lending money for non zero interests and banning evictions to name few partially copied by the west (now reversed) achievement of western workers within two decades.

Today digital iron curtain of censorship and political persecution is raised against by the west once again.

      1. Oh, so now we’re supporting Stalin … listen idiots. There is only one side to take. Not the Russians. Not the U.S. Not NATO. It’s the Ukrainian side. Stop the fucking war!

But of course, we are helpless to stop it. The fact that we are, shows how far we are from democracy.

  12. Dear Chris,

As a former tree planter, I highly commend your suggestion at the end of the article!

As a present day aspiring writer, please check out my latest piece on Substack!!

(The Amazing Noam Chomsky!!!-where we we be without him?!)
    PS You’re next!!!

  13. I don’t get the comments that often follow Chris H.’s posts that castigate him for not proposing precise cures for the social ills he criticizes.

He’s a journalist; an investigative reporter. It’s his job to give us the actual results of political, social, and economic actions. He’s also an ordained minister. In that role, his job is moral, to call out injustices and their impacts on the least among us.

He’s not an elected official, not the leader of an alternative political party, not a professor of history or sociology or labor economics. Were he to insist on specific solutions, the fact he isn’t an expert in some field would mean instant criticism.

That’s not to say only so-called experts should count. We all know what expertise in capitalist economics has done to the world. Same for scientific knowledge that goes into increasingly lethal weapons. We have every right to expect that expertise not be authoritarian, that it be used for the common good. That takes judgement on our part. Why expect Chris H. or anyone else to solve all of our problems for us?

    1. @Rafi Simonton
These are trolls who clearly don’t like Hedges. Complaining that a journalist or opinion writer doesn’t propose solutions is completely illegitimate, and is nothing but a distraction from the issues raised. Same with complaining that it’s all “gloom & doom;” sorry if the truth hurts, do something about it if you don’t like it.

As to expertise, that’s nothing more than a tool and it can be used for good, evil, or neutral purposes. What matters most is what people want to do and what they want to prevent, whether they prioritize the right things, and whether they have the guts to stand up for what’s right.

  14. Never forget that these Christian Right homicidal maniac’s all coalesced around
their leader: one orange blind-narcissist sociopath freak show topped with orange cotton candy made of piss, Heil Drumfler!

  15. This part, the :

“Trilateral Commission along with the US State Department and major foundations are seeking to destroy them.”

    This is not true why?

  16. I just finished reading “Greater Gotham” the same talking points and propaganda were used 100 years ago to silence opposition to war, the 1% of corporate rule, support of unions, the minimum wage, women’s issues, et al. Our 2 party corporate run country will devolve into racism. Most of our ruling class have dual citizenship’s, which should not be allowed. And our military budget should be severely reduced.

  17. Rejection of all forms of militancy contributes to the passivity of progressives to defend against encroaching authoritarianism.

  18. Mr. Hedges,

Human life begins at conception/fertilization. This fact of life is not disputed in the scientific community. We all started human life as a single cell with our full genetic code. Every abortion kills a human being. That too is a fact.

Instead of destroying the most innocent and defenseless among the human species — the unborn — why not work to ensure the best for unborn babies and their mothers — e.g. universal quality prenatal and postnatal care, Medicare for all, adequate paid maternity leave, quality child care, affordable housing, just paying productive jobs?

The Catholic Church (composed of Catholic Christians), teaches a “consistent ethic of life” which works to protect the lives and dignity of every single human being from conception to natural death. This is the fairest, most logical, and most loving stance any person and nation can take. Please honestly take a good look at it. (see: https://www.crs.org/resource-center/CST-101). No one is expendable!

For life, social justice and peace,
    Tony Magliano

    1. @Tony Donald Magliano
So your main concern on a planet overrun by gross human overpopulation is human fetuses? Wow, talk about a human supremacist! Not to mention your disregard for women, their rights, their bodies, and their feelings.

  19. We kill human beings for many reasons.

And millions of little fertilized beings are spontaneously aborted — killed by biological processes, every year, all over the planet.

Your church does not regard a being born into sin as “innocent,” in any case — it’s a word that only has a legal definition.

“Innocence” is not detectable empirically or verifiably as a property.

    Enough with the confused metaphysics.

Killing a being which has never been conscious is much less important than the right of the woman to determine her own destiny.

What you advocate is forced childbirth.

We are very far from a society that would provide the kind of care you speak about.

Getting there will take the expenditure of many lives, some of them blastulas and fetuses, many of them fascists and exploiters. The fetus will never feel any pain or suffering or want, or discrimination.

The exploiters — their feelings are null and void.

    First things first.

  20. What nominally condemning aggression UN charter is blind to is a fact that not only military attack or invasion is an act of war but hard financial, economic sanctions, trade or exchange embargoes, total blockades are all acts of war according to international law. Also foreign funded and sponsored, coordinated attempts of regime change are nothing but acts of war. Extreme propaganda against particular nation or culture or ethnicity or race as well as warmongering and psychological warfare against citizenry, domestic and foreign are all acts of aggressive war that must be condemned and remedied.

All principle based pacifists out there must understand that reality and when condemning one side or another for aggression they have to condemn all forms of aggression and specifically non military aggression that in fact took more human toll of pain, suffering and death than hot war ever did so far. All antiwar movements must condemn all forms of aggression and war and demanding fair, direct and equatable successful negotiations among conflicted parties as such negotiations can not only stop the war but can win lasting peace.

Unfortunately it won’t happen under rule of aggressive, expansionist, concentrated global capital and global oligarchs controlling governments of nation states.

Political Aggression that ends up often in war is born at home and at school in a benign form of so called patriotism, self righteousness and phony humanitarianism and in more sinister form of extreme chauvinism or nationalism, or racism, ethnicism or religious sectarianism.

War starts and ends at home.

  21. Lots of great comments here! This Christian fascism concept strikes me as somewhat of a misdirection though I don’t think it’s intentional. It doesn’t seem there would be Christian fascism without Jewish fascism in 21st century America. It’s a union of individuals from each cultural background. They both need each other the Zionists and Christian Zionists.

A fairer description would be Judeo- Christian fascism. This is best manifested in Zionism and the cancel culture and censorship attacks that were perfected to support it now applied generally to a variety of people, web sites, media, and topics. Just look into Norman Finkelstein for a prime example of it in action! Possibly even listen to him and learn a thing or two.

For instance the ADL is presently involved in censoring internet sites and media as you know, plus it was involved in teaching military level Israeli crowd control techniques to US police as seen during Occupy protests and police games in the Bay Area of California. This has also wreaked havoc in Black communities across the country due to police violence.

I’d also guess that almost every big bucks public corporation, the ones that breed Gizzilionaires on Wall St. support Zionism 100% or at least 93%. We all know money corrupts and politicians Christian, fascist, and/or otherwise will often say or do anything for money! So lets take a quick look at American BIG money and who has the most.

Mr. Hedges says: “But behind the walls of the Democratic Party’s Potemkin village stands the billionaire class. Democrats have failed to address the structural injustices that turned America into an oligarchic state”…so lets look at The Forbes 400 List for 2021 (easy to look up). We’ll just look at the first 10 people since after that we get family repetition:

    1. Jeff Bezos $201 billion
    2. Elon Musk 190.5
    3. Mark Zuckerberg 134.5
    4. Bill Gates 134
    5. Larry Page 123
    6. Sergey Brin 118.5
    7. Larry Ellison 117.3
    8. Warren Buffet 102
    9. Steve Balmer 96.5
    10. Michael Bloomberg 70

So there are just a few of the very wealthy Big Finance people who are possibly influencing the things like an oligarchic state Mr. Hedges has written about above. We may all be able to agree that their sex is male, their race, White. Now what about their individual familial religious histories? These seem potentially asymmetrical to individual group representation numbers of religions as a whole in US demographics.

Similarly there are no women (50 percent of the population) in the top ten or people that can’t pass as White. So much for the hollow cry from Judeo- Christian fascists in Washington for “democracy.” US “democracy” is sold to the highest bidders! Usually White males, you fill in the rest…

  22. I dunno aboututilation but Hillary Clinton was involved in pedophilia. Just ask Max Clifford, who absolutely died of natural causes.

    1. ‘I don’t know about mutilation’

  23. It is more just slightly ironic for you to be slamming any religious people’s insanity and ignorance. Sadly you yourself are very much a part of the problem. As a proud Presbyterian preacher you too spew ignorant religious nonsense from the BuyBull which has caused more grief, suffering, death and destruction than any other human invention in our history. Or are you attempting to establish that your version of the “good book” is superior to the now literally 40,000+ versions of Christianity?
Capitalism is insignificant compared to the horrific effects caused by the childish, ignorant fairy tales about a Jewish Zombie who is his own father who can make you live forever if you only telepathically accept him as your master and obey him unquestionably so he can remove the “sin” from your “soul” because a rib woman was convinced to eat a fruit from a magical tree by a talking snake.

Your Bible not only has nothing to say against human slavery, it actively promotes it. Who can forget Ephesians “Slaves obey your masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.” For someone who spent a career fighting for political freedoms your credibility is seriously in doubt based on the “people’s opium” you promote through your toxic mythologies.
